Frequently Asked Questions

When is the deadline to submit my application for the writer-in-residence program?

We accept applications on a rolling basis; there is no deadline. If your application is accepted, we will work with you to find the best available dates for you to complete your residency with us.

How do I apply for a fellowship?

All new applications are considered for one of our fellowships. There is not a separate application process for these awards.

What do I do about food?

While meals are not included in your residency we do provide coffee, tea, apples from our orchard, and eggs (when the hens are laying!). Each property has a fully stocked kitchen in terms of any dishware, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots and pans, spices, and condiments you might need.

Near the Manor and the Garden Cottage, we have several beautiful vegetable gardens with lots of seasonal, organic produce from which to choose. You are more than welcome to help yourself.

There is a Piggly Wiggly grocery store in nearby Monteagle (about a 10 minute drive from Rivendell) and a Kroger about 25 minutes down the Mountain in Decherd, TN.

Is there cell phone service? WiFi?

Verizon cell phone users will have service, but most other providers do not pick up a signal on property. If you drive into downtown Sewanee or the campus at the University of the South about 2.5 miles away, you’ll be able to pick up a signal there. We have WiFi but ask that you limit usage to research only. We ask that you don’t stream movies or use applications like Skype as they are a heavy pull on our limited WiFi.

What’s the weather like in Sewanee, Tennessee?

During the summer, the day temperatures vary from the 70s to the 90s, and at night, from the 50s to the 70s. In the winter, day temperatures range from the 20s to the 50s, and at night, from the mid-teens to the 30s. We are known for the dense fog found on the Mountain.

I’d like to partner with Rivendell on a workshop or event. Who do I contact?

Please contact Rivendell’s Executive Director, Carmen Toussaint, at Carmen@rivendellwriterscolony.org.
