Support 10 in ’17

by Kate Parrish on November 15th, 2016

“The most powerful words in English are ‘tell me a story,’ words that are intimately related to the complexity of history, the origins of language, the continuity of the species, the taproot of our humanity, our singularity and art itself.” Pat Conroy wrote those words in 2012, the same year Rivendell Writers’ Colony opened its doors to storytellers of all genres, and we are reminded today how much those words still ring true.

This year, as part of our ongoing commitment to our community of writers and readers who embrace the life of the book, we are launching 10 in ’17, a campaign to raise $5,000 to fund ten, two-week residency scholarships in 2017. But we can’t do it alone. We need your help funding these important awards.

If you’ve been to Rivendell, you understand just how special this place is. John T. Edge, author and director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, says, “Rivendell delivers what writers crave: peace, quiet, and bucolic distance from distraction.” Kevin Wilson, author of The Family Fang, the novel turned major motion picture, says, “I cannot imagine writing the novel as easily without the support of this writers’ colony.” Our aim is to give experiences like these to writers as often as we can.

Your contribution to 10 in ‘17 will give ten writers who have never been to Rivendell what Julie Cantrell—past writer-in-residence and NYT bestselling author—calls “a beautiful dance with the creative forces.” Your help ensures that new voices with stories to tell will have a home at Rivendell.

We understand there are many wonderful causes and organizations to support. As 2016 winds down, however, we ask that you consider making a donation that will support the life of the mind and the spirit at Rivendell Writers’ Colony. No donation is too small and every donation is tax-deductible.

Your stories are important. Your words matter. Now, more than ever, Rivendell is committed to providing writers—both seasoned and aspiring—a place to imagine, create, and examine. We thank you for your donation.
